Quickfire Q&A… with Rebecca Sky

We asked Rebecca Sky, author of the gorgeous Arrowheart, a series of quickfire questions. Read on for more info…

1. When I was 5 years old I wanted to be…

I need to preface my answer by explaining that I have bright ginger hair and was sort of a wild child, the kind my parents needed to leash…literally. Plus, I was one of the only people in my small town with my hair colour and I grew up in the time of “kick a Ginger day,” which wasn’t the best of days for a mouthy girl like me.  So when I was little and anyone asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up, I would tell them I wanted to be Irish, because Ireland is one of the few places in the world, a loud mouthed red-head could blend into a crowd. To this day, it’s been a dream to travel to Ireland and though I’ve been to nearly 30 Countries, I haven’t made it there yet. I think I’m saving the trip for something really special.

2. If I were to be stranded on a deserted island, my one luxury item would be…

I should probably choose sun block because I burn sitting too close to a fireplace… but that’s practical and we’re talking luxury, so my luxury item would be a solar powered laptop, because I could get so much writing done without the distraction of Twitter and Netflix. *Come to think of it…excuse me while I research how to become stranded on a deserted island*

3. The last song I listened to…

4. The first album I ever bought…

The first album I ever bought was Amy Winehouse’s Lioness Hidden Treasures. I listened to it so much that I wore it out and had to buy it again. She’s one of the best female vocalists ever! You can find me often, dancing around my apartment in slippers, using a hairbrush as a microphone, and signing along to this album!

5. The book I’ve read the most times…

This is a tough one, because it’s likely a toss-up between The Hunger Games, Harry Potter and Anne of Green Gables. But I’ve probably read Anne more. Also, while we’re on this topic, I will love you forever if you write a fanfic mashup of those three.

6. The one piece of advice I would give my teenage self…

Hi teenage Rebecca, or Bex as you liked to be called. You should know it’s okay to ask questions, to challenge what’s being taught to you at home and school, and to explore and discover who you are. Because being who others want you to be, won’t make anyone happy in the end. And trust me, when you finally do embrace your wild, quirky self, all your dreams come true!

7. If I had to choose between saying everything I think or never speaking again…

Oh man, this is a mean question. I’d actually like to meet the brave person who’d choose saying everything they think. As an author my thoughts consist of things like, “Oh that outfit he’s wearing is just weird enough to put in my book,” or, *while eavesdropping on an argument at the table over, “get it girl, fight for your beliefs. Don’t let him treat you less than a Queen. Actually, this fight would totally work in the scene I’m writing…” you get the point. It’s an unfair paradox for authors.

8. The person I call when I need cheering up…

My Nana. She’s the best, and she thinks I can do no wrong. (Don’t tell her I had something to do with the missing apple pie incident of 2005!)

9. The best invention ever…

Printing press! I am biased because books, but also WHAT WOULD THE WORLD BE LIKE WITHOUT BOOKS?? I don’t know about you, but curling up on a rainy day with your dog, a fresh cup of tea, and a long roll of parchment isn’t the same as dog cuddles with tea, and books!

10. My most used emoji…

Right now, my most used emoji is the Arrowheart (💘) because book!!! But my second most used is the “see no evil” monkey one (🙈) which I use more like an embarrassment emoji, and I do tend to embarrass myself often.
